In Georgia O’Keefe’s own words: “In 1945, I surprised myself by taking an uncharacteristic vacation to the Caribbean Islands. While exploring the beaches of Cozumel, I picked up a stupendous white conch shell with a sizeable hole in it and held it up to see the brilliant blue sky beaming through. I was completely mesmerized and it compelled me to create a sculpture of what I had previously only painted.”

Artist statement
Georgia’s paintings of blue skies through white pelvis bones are evocative and thrilling. She wrote that "I was most interested in the holes in the bones - what I saw through them - particularly the blue from holding them up in the sun against the sky, as one is apt to do when one seems to have more sky than earth in one's world. They were most wonderful against the Blue.”
I was inspired to create a sculpture with a viewpoint inward instead of out to the sky - a different aspect of seeing, to experience the Blue of introspection, framed by the pure white shelter of a conch shell.
